Sudarshan R. Iyengar
About
Sudarshan R. Iyengar is a Carnatic vocalist with over 16 years of training in the South Indian classical tradition. His music is defined by a seamless blend of classical rigor and creative improvisation, focused on conveying the deep emotional expression (bhāva) of Carnatic music to both seasoned connoisseurs and global audiences. For nearly a decade, he has been under the tutelage of Vidwan Jayakrishnan Unni and the legendary ‘Sangita Kalanidhi’ Vidwan Neyveli R. Santhanagopalan, whose guidance has added profound depth and sophistication to his vocal artistry.
Sudarshan’s music has traveled widely across continents. He holds the unique distinction of being the youngest artist ever invited to perform at the Festival of India in Paris, France. His acclaimed concert credits include performances at prestigious venues such as Bidaram Krishnappa Rama Mandira (India), Indian Fine Arts (Dubai), IndiRaga (Belgium), and the Birmingham Thyagaraja Festival (UK), as well as at Indian Embassies in Belgium, the Netherlands, and the UAE.
A versatile collaborator, Sudarshan frequently bridges the gap between music and movement. He has lent his voice to numerous Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi productions and arangetrams, working alongside reputed, international artists such as Sooraj Subramaniam, Sophia Salingaros, and Prathap Ramachandra to name a few.
Beyond the concert stage, Sudarshan is a dedicated advocate for musical education and discourse. He has been featured in lecture-demonstrations and radio interviews for the All India Radio and local French radio stations, and has shared insights on Layānubhava (the experience of rhythm) for SPIC MACAY Europe, making the nuances of the tradition accessible to international listeners.
Alongside his performing career, Sudarshan is a committed educator who teaches Carnatic vocal music. He welcomes inquiries from anyone interested in learning or experiencing the richness of Carnatic classical music.
